earth_painted_greenUnder the Sun and the Moon, Margaret Wise Brown
The secret strength of Margaret Wise Brown's poetry is little immediate influence. She wrote things meant to deepen over repeated readings rather than something that would strike at first but quickly become trite. Not much children's literature can be read hundreds of times, but Brown's really can. The simple and skilful repetitive poems are best appreciated by those, who have read this book aloud many times to a child.
Nevertheless, the largest strength of the book, may be the gentle yet visually wonderful illustrations made by Tom Leonard who himself deserves more attention. His series of illustrations of animals and landscapes creates a world for Brown's poetry to inhabit. Leonard interprets Brown's often spare literary style and evokes mood and sometimes filling in as storyteller.

Robert Louis Stevenson Books & Poetry
A Child’s Garden of Verses
This is a good, extra-sturdy book for children. It consists of these eight complete poems: The Land of Counterpane, The Lamplighter, Happy Thought, Foreign Lands, The Cow, My Shadow, The Swing, My Bed is a Boat. Most toddlers do not like to read poems, but you   can just read the first few lines until they grow into them, and they'll enjoy looking at the pictures. There are various illustrations in full color by various artists including one of a boy in a tree by Jessie Willcox Smith (Foreign Lands), a wonderful colored drawing of a Mom showing a bird to her four little ones (Happy Thought), a simple but attractive picture of a little girl watching a cow (The Cow).

The Earth is Painted Green, Barbara Brenner
Barbara Brenner's The Earth is Painted Green is an interesting book of poems for young readers. Children will like the poems and the charm of these poems helps them to value their world and to create in them a desire to protect it. The beautiful and colorful illustrations by S.D. Schindler, demonstrate depth and detail, space and a place for children to amuse and to enjoy. The book is multi-cultural.

childs_garde_of_versesA A Milne Poetry
AA Milne bases his poems on the life of his much loved son – Christopher Robin. Our children delight in his, and other children’s antics, which are delivered so wonderfully in verse. You can read Now We Are Six  and When We Were Young.

Robert Frost, Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening, Susan Jeffers
This hardcover book is an adorable way to acquaint your children to this poet. This version is done in the form of a picture story book with lovely illustrations. You and your children follow a man and his horse as they delight in the new fallen snow and the animals around them in the woods.

TS Elliot’s Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats
What a delight to see the silly side of this poet. We have enjoyed getting to know the cats in his life through this book. Andrew Lloyd Webber used these poems for his smash hit “CATS”. Really great fun!
