James Herriot Treasury for Children The stories of an English country vet. The pictures are beautiful and one can almost feel the cold wind whistling down the mountain as Mr Herriot goes about his business of caring for the animals (and the owners) of his little country town.
Beatrix Potter Treasury We all know about naughty Peter Rabbit and careless Jeremy Fisher. But there are a host of other stories to look out for. Her gorgeous water color pictures are inspiring to the naturalist in all of us.
Capyboppy, Bill Peet This book describes merry, true-life adventures of the Peet family when their eldest son agrees to get a capybara as a pet. This is a true living book with enough emotion and scientific fact to entertain and educate your children.
Nama Kwa’s Garden, Mary Callahan A beautiful story about the local people of the early South Africa and their desire to bless their village chief with a garden situated in a desolate plain. This story features working together as a team for the common good.
Katje the Windmill Cat, Gretchen Woelfle The base of this lovely story is real events that happened to a cat and a baby that survive a flood in the Netherlands. The cat begins to lead the light-hearted single life, but some changes in the human family causes a change in lifestyle. As a result the cat moves from sleeping in a comfortable bed to sleeping in the windmill. A dike holding back sea water breaks during rather stormy weather and the whole town is flooded. The cat saves the life of the family's new baby, and later, when the child grows older, receives the baby's cradle for a bed. The story is adorable for even older readers.
The Crippled Lamb, Max Lucado Max Lucado wrote a story many children enjoy. In The Crippled Lamb the life of Joshua - a lamb is described. He is different than the other sheep. Joshua has no parents, and he is crippled. An old cow named Abigail is the only friend of Lamb. The cow often says him that God has a special place for those like him. Joshua must stay behind, when the shepherds start to gather the sheep to walk to the next valley. The others laugh and say unpleasant things to him. Josh and Abigail are very surprised later that night, when they are awakened by a woman and a child lying in the stables with them. They see Josh lying next to the baby (Jesus) to warm him. He soon learns that God did have a special place for him, even though he may be different than rest of the sheep.
