Tips for Preparing Children for the Sacraments

Tips for Preparing Children for the Sacraments
  1. They should attend masses in their parish and make sure their parish priest is aware that they are home schooling their children. He may want to interview every child before the sacrament is given, to make sure he or she understands the sacrament and is correctly prepared. Parents can attend this meeting with their child.

2. Parents should communicate with their children and educate them. Not everybody home schools their children and their pastor may have never known a family that home schools their children. Parents should be patient and let him get to know them and their children.

3. Parents should prepare in advance. It is a good idea to move toward their pastor about 10-12 months earlier so both parties know what to expect. Pastor may wish to see the study material and may offer some suggestions to parents. Parents will want to know the proposed dates that the children in the parish will be receiving their first confession and first communion.

The greatest of the seven sacraments is the Holy Eucharist. Preparing the home schooled child to receive the Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity of Jesus Christ is an important moral obligation for parents and that obligation expands to the whole Catholic community
