Socialization and Home Schooling

Socialization and Home Schooling

One of the most popular words used by those who are critical of home school is socialization. A lot of parents are concerned that their children will not be capable of normal socialization with other children. They usually are confident that home school is some sort of convent or monastery where children are allowed interaction only with their parents and their siblings, with no influence from the outside world. Luckily, this criticism holds little truth. Home schooled children usually are very adult for their age and do not show a lot of the behavioral problems that are widespread in today's public schools.

Parents who tell others that they home school are often met with gasps of surprise and disappointment, followed by a storm of questions which strongly imply that home schooling their child will make them socially isolated. What people fail to think about is the fact that home schooling really gives more opportunities for a child to socialize with children that parent find appropriate. On the contrary to home schooling, in public schools there is no way to safe a child from being exposed to extremely negative stimuli.

Anyone who has any experience with home school at all knows that vision of isolation is as far from the real facts. Children of all ages interrelate with each other when in home school. Home schooled children have the choice of attending classes in the community during the school day where they have a great opportunity to communicate seniors and older students. Everyone is equal in communication for these children no matter the age, gender, or race.

It is possible for home schooled children to make friends in other places, such as playgroups, or sports teams, through community events, church gatherings, and outdoor activities namely in places where socializing is suitable and confident.
