Overestimation of child’s abilities
Frequently parents think their children are perfect in all subjects, but all parents have their prejudices. The true is that while a child is a brilliant in math, he or she may really struggle at reading or writing. Another child may like reading aloud, but have problems with numbers. It is very important for parents to keep back any notions they have about their children’s abilities, in order to reach their full potential.
Teaching the way parents liked to learn
It is well known that certain kinds of teaching styles are more successful than others. Everyone learns in different way. Parents should not expect that because they learned best when shown pictures, that the same is true for their child. It would be better to experiment with different styles of teaching and ask for their child’s contribution to help parents form out works best for them.
Ignoring classroom organization
Parents usually think that because they have already established a discipline system for their shildren in their home, there is no need to come up with different strategies for class time. In fact, they are wrong as class time needs to be separated out from their usual at home activity.
Teaching a thing at a time
When parents plan their everyday schedule fthey usually break up their teaching time by subject, for example reading from 8-9, math from 9-10, and so on. This is not a bad way to schedule their time either, as long as they have a big picture in mind. Their child will be better able to keep all the subjects that parents teach if they are interrelated.
Teaching is telling
This is the most frequent mistake of teaching parents. They explain something new to their student and do not understand why it does not attach. That is because teaching is not only telling. In order to be a good teacher for a child, a parent schould learn a variety of teaching methods. The important thing is that parents must know that part of teaching is learning. They need to be regularly seeking out new techniques to improve their and their children's skills.
