Dictation: Method of dictation is used so as to teach spelling and strengthen grammar and composition abilities of a child. It is necessary to prepare a dictation and give a child a sentence or passage to study until he or she is sure in knowledge of all the spelling, capitalization and punctuation. Then a parent dictates the passage to a child saying each line only once, pausing and observing as he or she writes to catch any mistake and correct it at once. Dictation exercises are the most useful for children around the third or fourth grades.
Copy Work: This method is used to teach and give practice in handwriting abilities of a child. As the child cautiously copies a poem, a passage or an inspiring quotation he or she also remembers grammar and punctuation rules. Copy work lessons should be short in order to reach better results and encourage the habits of attention and perfect execution without becoming tiring.
History: Charlotte Mason supposed history is the study of people’s lives but not just dates and events. Parents should read “living” biographies about modern famous people to their children. When it is possible, parents may use main sources such as diaries, journals, letters, autobiographies, narrations or speeches. It is necessary to repeat this process with other famous people and children will catch the idea of that time period in history.
Art Appreciation: Prominent artists and composers of history are showed in their paintings. Parents should display a picture and mention the artist who created it and a child looks at the picture and tries to remember all the details. When a child is ready, a parent turns the picture over and asks him or her to describe the picture. After the narration of a child, a parent displays the picture again and they notice any new aspects together. A parent should continue to study works by the same artist for some weeks until a child become familiar with that artist’s style. It is also possible to read a short biography about that artist. The music study may be taught in the same way, through the listening to the music of one composer at various times throughout the week.
