The eclectic home schooling method was created by Terry McKee. She coined the phrase while evaluating the home schooling methods used by her family. McKee realized their methods and philosophies were unique to other approaches and that other families across the United States probably had established unique methods as well.
The eclectic home schooling method, therefore, is not an actual method but more of a combination of methods. According to McKee: An Eclectic home schooler is one who looks at the different approaches and methods of home schooling, at the opinions and principles of each, and takes from each approach and method what is solid and good for his family, forming his own unique philosophy.
Eclectic home schooling method is selecting or employing personal constituents from a variety of sources, systems, or styles – an eclectic taste in music; an eclectic approach to organization the economy.
An eclectic home education is an approach which draws from the various methods of home schooling and takes from each whatever seems best for the individual family and situation. An Eclectic home schooler will investigate different approaches and curriculum and modify a scheme to meet the needs, temperaments, interests and learning styles of every student. Most eclectic approaches choose an initial curriculum, but it is not necessary to follow it closely, refining to their satisfaction.
An eclectic home shcooler may take the unschooling idea that education should be directed on a child. He or she may make use of unit studies to let a student to study his or her interests. There will maybe stress on reading classical books and other quality literature, as in the Classical, Charlotte Mason methods. He or she may select a structured math curriculum for one child and a more manipulative approach for another, due to their learning style.
